Your file, your copy
How to download your raw DNA data.
It's free, it takes about ten minutes, and the file belongs to you — you can use it with any service you choose, including this one. Here's exactly where the button is at each company.
AncestryDNA
Ancestry doesn't hand you the file on the spot — it emails you a link. Start this first if you're in a hurry.
- Sign in and open your AncestryDNA settings page.
- Choose Download DNA Data.
- Check the box allowing you to download your own data, then select Continue.
- Ancestry asks a second time on the next screen — this is not a mistake. Check the box acknowledging that you're downloading your own data, click Continue, and enter your password if you're asked to verify your account.
- Watch your email. Ancestry sends a download link — usually within about ten minutes, though it can take up to 24 hours.
- Download the .zip file to your computer or phone. Leave it zipped; you can upload it exactly as it arrives.
23andMe
23andMe generally lets you download directly from the site.
- Sign in and open your 23andMe data page.
- Or get there the long way: click your profile name in the top right of your homepage, choose Resources, then Browse Raw Genotyping Data, then Download at the top of the page.
- You can also open Account Settings and click View under 23andMe Data.
- Download the file to your computer or phone.
Have both? Upload both.
If you've tested with both companies, MarkerView Comprehensive merges the two files into a single report. Two vendors read different parts of the genome, so the merged file covers noticeably more markers than either one alone. There's no extra charge for the second file.
What happens after you upload
Your file is encrypted in transit and at rest, and you can delete your account and everything in it yourself at any time from Settings — no email request, no waiting period. The full trust answers →
Not ready yet? Nothing here expires. Your file stays yours; we'll be here when you have it.
Got the file? That's the hard part done.
